Egyptian Minister of Agriculture Alaa Farouk said today, Saturday, that Egypt’s wheat imports decreased to about 12.5 million tons in the fiscal year 2025-2026, compared to 13.2 million tons in the previous fiscal year.
Farouk also explained that local wheat production increased by more than 6.5% on an annual basis, to exceed 10 million tons in the fiscal year 2025-2026.
He added that the government supply system recorded its highest rates and is approaching the target of 5 million tons by the end of the season, which continues until mid-August.
More than a week ago, Reuters quoted farmers, merchants, and officials as saying that Egypt had purchased a record amount of the local wheat crop and was taking confident steps to achieve the goal of purchasing 5 million tons this season, after reforms aimed at reducing the country’s dependence on imports.
Official data indicate that the total quantity that the government has already purchased has reached 4.6 million tons of wheat for the season that began in mid-April and extends until mid-August, which is the largest quantity ever.
