US President Donald Trump has renovated the pond at the Lincoln Monument ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary, but does not get rid of the algae, writes Politico.
The dam in Washington DC has been suffering from algal blooms since 1922.
In 2012, the Obama government spent approximately SEK 319 million on a renovation, but the problems remained.
Trump ordered the bottom of the dam to be repainted “American flag blue” ahead of America’s 250th anniversary celebration.
– It will look much more beautiful than in 1922 when it was built, Trump said before the repainting, hiring a contractor that he believed was cheaper than the authorities’ proposal. The bill landed at around SEK 131 million.
Even so, the algae has returned, just days after the renovation was completed. Now they are combated with ozone and hydrogen peroxide, but experts describe the pond as a “perfect” environment for algae growth.
