The mother of the legendary Cape Verdean goalkeeper Fosenha will be present in the stands when he takes to the field in his next match in the FIFA World Cup next Sunday, after American officials moved to ensure that she obtains a visa in time to attend the match against Uruguay in Miami.

The 40-year-old goalkeeper, one of the tournament’s most prominent stars, succeeded in thwarting Spain’s powerful attack in Cape Verde’s first-ever match in the World Cup last Monday, as he presented an amazing performance and kept the European champion away from his goal in the match that ended in a goalless draw in Group H.

But Fusenha tearfully revealed that his mother, Ana Candida Evora, was not present at the Atalanta match, citing a visa problem.

US Congressman Hakeem Jeffries said in a statement on Wednesday, “No mother should miss the opportunity to see her son make history.

“I spoke with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and asked the State Department to do everything in its power to ensure that his mother can attend the next match for Cape Verde.”

He added, “It is my honor to announce that Fosinha’s mother will be able to obtain a visa in time to attend their match (Cape Verde) next Sunday.”

Cape Verde was among dozens of countries whose citizens had to pay financial guarantees of up to $15,000 to enter the United States in light of the strict campaign launched by President Donald Trump on immigration.

This requirement was later lifted for World Cup ticket holders, but Evora told Reuters it had already ruled out attempting the trip, citing the high costs.

Jeffries added, “All fees have been waived in line with official policy. The necessary arrangements are currently being made for the mother to travel to meet her son in Miami.”
