The WC party on Midsummer’s Day is threatened in some places.
At least if you have planned to watch the match under the open sky.
– I think this could affect the possibility for many to see the match outdoors, says meteorologist Lasse Rydqvist.
At 19.00 on Midsummer’s Day, Sweden plays its second match in the World Cup against the Netherlands, and many plan to watch the match outdoors.
But it can be both wet and noisy.
During Thursday morning SMHI issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms throughout southern Sweden on Saturday.
Lasse Rydqvist, meteorologist at Clearwarns that locally strong thunderstorms may persist into the evening in several places on Saturday.
“Will not risk people’s lives”
The match is shown, for example on the big screen at Stockholm Stadium.
When asked if the storm affects the showing of the match, the city management office at Stockholm City responds with a comment via communicator Emilia Geijer:
– We keep an eye on the weather forecast and will make the assessment on the spot based on it. In case of danger of thunder, the necessary measures are taken. We will not risk people’s lives and health, she says.
“There is a greater risk there”
SMHI’s warning applies from Söderhamn and southwards – and in some places large amounts of rain may fall.
– It is very difficult to say exactly who is most affected by both the thunder and the largest amounts of rain because these are such local phenomena. This means that the differences can be significant only over distances of miles. But as the forecast looks right now, the focus is mainly shifted to the eastern parts of Götaland and Svealand during Saturday evening, where there is a greater risk of seeing the kick-off during the showers, says Lasse Rydqvist.
Advice: “Do it in good time”
“Väder-Lasse”, as the meteorologist became known during his time on TV4, adds:
– At the same time, it will be very humid and hot – it will probably feel like a real summer rain.
Should you unplug the TV if it starts thundering?
– Yes, if you have the opportunity, it is still good advice. Especially if you have into the house. But you have to do it in good time – don’t stand and pull cords when the thunder is already directly overhead.
Sweden won the opener against Tunisia 5–1. The Netherlands drew 2–2 against Japan.
