A Russian artist who often satirized Vladimir Putin has been shot dead in Poland.

A prosecutor in Lublin in eastern Poland confirms media reports that 44-year-old Semjon Skrepetskij was shot dead at a parking lot in the small town of Biala Podlaska on Monday.

Two Belarusian citizens have been arrested, the prosecutor continues. They have not been formally charged with a crime at this stage.

Skrepetsky, whose real name was Robert Kuzovov, was shot first with three shots and then two more at close range after he fell to the ground.

Just a few days earlier, the artist had participated in a demonstration in Berlin. There he brought out one of his most famous works – an Orthodox icon painting in which a caricature of Joseph Stalin holds a little Vladimir Putin like a baby Jesus.
