Saudi Arabia thrashed Argentina in the World Cup opener four years ago and were close to another opening thrashing against South American opposition. But Maximiliano Araújo equalized on a goalkeeper rebound in the 80th minute and the match ended 1–1.
Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera also dropped a rebound that led to a goal. At the end of the first half, he could not prevent Saudi Arabia’s Abdulelah Al-Amri from scoring the first goal of the match.
Uruguay is a storied footballing nation with two World Cup gold medals in its trophy cabinet, and Muslera made Uruguayan football history when the match started.
He is the first Uruguayan to have been in the squad for five World Cup finals and now also the oldest Uruguayan to have played a World Cup match. Muslera is already 40 years old Swedish time, because he has his birthday on Tuesday. But when the game was played in Miami, he was only 39 years old.

The third record is held by Muslera together with Edinson Cavani. They have both now played 17 World Cup matches.
Uruguay and Saudi Arabia play in World Cup Group H along with Spain and Cape Verde. All teams in the group have one point after the first round.
