Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced that ending the war in Lebanon constitutes an integral part of the ongoing agreement with the United States, stressing that the official implementation of the memorandum of understanding will begin on Friday, in parallel with the launch of a new negotiating round in Switzerland aimed at reaching a final agreement.
Araqchi said, in a press conference on Tuesday, that the declaration of the end of the war is the most prominent achievement in the first phase of the agreement, and it was announced on Monday morning.
Araqchi stressed that Tehran considered from the beginning that stopping the war with Iran was directly linked to ending the war in Lebanon, within the framework of mutual commitments between the parties.
He explained that the memorandum of understanding includes, in its first party, the United States and Israel, and in its second party, Iran and Hezbollah, warning that any Israeli military attack on Lebanon or the continuation of the occupation will be considered a clear violation of the agreement.
Araqchi indicated that the negotiations with Washington will continue for 60 days, including discussing the nuclear file and lifting sanctions in their final stage, stressing that ending the war in Lebanon also includes Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory.
Berri and Qalibaf: America must oblige Israel
The Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, and the Speaker of the Iranian Shura Council, Muhammad Baqir Qalibaf, stressed, during a phone call between them, the need for Washington to oblige Israel to end its war on Lebanon, stop the demolition of Lebanese villages, and withdraw from the occupied territories.
Since the announcement of the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran at midnight on Monday, many Israeli officials have expressed their anger, stressing that the memorandum is not binding on Israel to withdraw from southern Lebanon, and pledging to continue their attacks.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu renewed his commitment to remaining within the buffer security zone in southern Lebanon, pledging not to allow what he described as “terrorist organizations” to establish themselves on the border, noting that there are discrepancies with President Trump on some files, while emphasizing the priority of Israeli security interests.
In Beirut, the Lebanese presidency expressed its hope that the recent developments would open the door to liberating the lands and ending the suffering of the people, calling for a rally around the state and its institutions.
