The Riksdag says yes to abolishing the municipal veto for the extraction and processing of uranium.
The issue has been debated intensively, not least in the municipalities that could be covered by uranium mining.
The government believes that nuclear substances should be treated in the same way as other metals and minerals and that the regulatory framework is now becoming more logical and predictable.
The opposition reserved itself against the proposal, but could only agree on a joint counter-proposal to call on the government to ensure the municipalities’ influence in the extraction of uranium and alum shale.
At the same time, the government has signaled that it wants to investigate a new municipal veto against mining in alum slate and that it should apply retroactively.
The changes to the law will come into force on 15 July 2026.
