The Petherska Monastery in Kyiv is on fire after Russian attacks.

An almost 1,000-year-old monastery is on fire after the night’s Russian attack on Kiev.

Pictures show how flames rise from the famous Petherska Monastery, also called the Cave Monastery, in central Kiev. The monastery, which was founded in 1051, is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Petjerska monastery has made headlines in recent years. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church officially broke with Russia in 2022, and two years later the Ukrainian government banned the branch of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine that has ties to Moscow. The monks of the monastery were exiled.

The Russian Orthodox Church has rallied behind Vladimir Putin since, in February 2022, he launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

It is not the first time that the monastery has been attacked. In January, several buildings were damaged there, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture.
