It’s easy to forget that the United States and Paraguay have the same national colors. So imagine showing up to a FIFA World Cup match being reminded not just of that, but also of both nations’ affinities for the red and white stripes.

If you aren’t an aficionado of the international jerseys — not just of today, but also some past versions of the jerseys — it might look as though everyone at Los Angeles Stadium (SoFi’s name through the World Cup) were rooting for the same team on Friday.

The mood was bright across both fan bases before kickoff, and there were some fun moments of creative expression to be seen. The American fans were perhaps the more eccentric group, and coloring outside the lines is something the traveling U.S. supporters group, the American Outlaws, is known for. There was a red, white and blue Liberty flame hat, some sombreros, and at least one pair of fans dressed in Stars and Stripes overalls who, at least to this reporter, gave off Mario Bros. vibes.
