Representative in the Hezbollah parliamentary bloc, Hussein Hajj Hassan, confirmed today, Friday, that what the Lebanese authorities were informed of by the Iranian side indicates that Lebanon will be fully included in any possible ceasefire agreement.
Hajj Hassan told Al Jazeera that the party is following communications and news coming from various parties and mediators, including Iranian, American, Qatari and Pakistani officials, noting that the available data indicates a high probability of reaching and signing an agreement, but he called for caution over what he described as the possibility of an American retreat or Israeli sabotage.
He added that previous experiences require cautious dealing with any understandings, and pointed out that the United States and Israel had previously backed away from previous agreements, considering that what is required are clear guarantees that prevent this from happening again.
Regarding whether the potential agreement would include Lebanon, Hajj Hassan confirmed that the information they received from Iran and from the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, as well as from the mediators, indicated that Lebanon would be included in the ceasefire and the end of military operations.
He said, “What we have clearly learned from our Iranian brothers is that Lebanon is fully included in the ceasefire, in addition to the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon.”
He pointed out that any agreement must be accompanied by the withdrawal of Israeli forces, stressing that the party does not accept Israel remaining in Lebanese territory or granting it what it described as freedom of military action inside Lebanon.
Clear guarantees
In response to a question about Hezbollah’s commitment to stop its operations once a memorandum of understanding is signed between Iran and the United States, Hajj Hassan said that this is linked to the other party’s commitment to the agreement.
He added, “If an agreement is reached and Israel attacks, is Hezbollah required to remain silent?”, stressing that the party will not accept a return to what was before March 2, 2026.
He stressed that Israel and the United States are the two parties required first to commit, considering that any agreement requires clear timing and guarantees.
Representative Hussein Al-Haj Hassan pointed out that the recent period witnessed thousands of Israeli violations of previous agreements, and accused Israel and the American administration of not complying, saying that the Lebanese and Iranian sides are committed to the understandings.
He explained that Hezbollah cannot make unilateral commitments if there is no commitment from the Israeli side, stressing that the responsibility for pressuring Israel falls on the United States as the guarantor party.
He talked about previous agreements that he said Washington announced and then retracted, considering that this represents evidence of the necessity of real guarantees for any new agreement.
Hajj Hassan said that the party that has experience in commitment is Hezbollah, while Israel did not adhere to previous agreements, indicating that the next stage must be based on clear implementation of any understanding reached.
The Lebanese MP stressed that any potential agreement must lead to a cessation of the war and Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory, stressing that Lebanon – as he put it – will not accept the continuation of the status quo or the survival of Israeli forces inside its territory.
