An official Jordanian source denied to Al Jazeera Net the validity of what was reported about submitting an American proposal to Jordan that includes canceling or ending the Jordanian role in the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The source said, “Any document of this kind has not been submitted or presented to any official Jordanian body.”
The source’s statements came in response to what was recently circulated in the Israeli and international media, which reported that there were American and Israeli efforts to reformulate the management of Al-Aqsa Mosque and end the historical Jordanian custodianship over the Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem.
The source said that the United States and Israel “know in advance the Jordanian position on any proposal that affects the Hashemite custodianship or the existing historical and legal situation in Al-Aqsa Mosque,” adding, “The extent of the official and popular Jordanian anger and rejection of such ideas is well known, and therefore no document of this kind was presented, and its owners will not dare to present it officially.”
The source explained to Al Jazeera Net that “similar ideas and proposals appear from time to time in media reports or political leaks, but Jordan has always dealt with them firmly, just as it previously dealt with projects and initiatives that were considered critical to national constants, most notably the alternative homeland projects and other proposals that were met with categorical Jordanian rejection.”
These leaks come at a time when Jordanian and Palestinian fears are mounting regarding continued Israeli attempts to impose new facts in Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque, amid Amman’s assertion that the Hashemite guardianship is a “red line” and that Jordan will continue to defend the holy sites and preserve the existing historical and legal status in the Holy Mosque.

Israeli and Western media and platforms have recently spoken about the existence of a plan aimed at restructuring the management of Al-Aqsa Mosque, by establishing a new body to supervise the mosque, allowing the expansion of access and prayer for Jews within the Holy Mosque, and giving Israel a role in managing the affairs of this religious site.
But the Jordanian source stressed that the Hashemite custodianship over the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem is based on solid historical, legal and international foundations, which were affirmed in the Jordanian-Israeli peace agreement in 1994, and were reaffirmed in the agreement signed in 2013 between King Abdullah II and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
The source confirmed that Jordan will continue to defend the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, preserve the historical and legal status existing there, and reject any measures or projects aimed at changing the identity of Jerusalem or harming the management of Jordan’s Islamic endowments.
The Jordanian source said, “Amman adheres to its firm position that East Jerusalem is occupied Palestinian territory and the capital of the future Palestinian state, and that the Jerusalem Endowments Department and the Affairs of the Blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque is the exclusive legal body authorized to manage and supervise the affairs of the Holy Mosque in accordance with international law and relevant international resolutions.”
Amman has always stressed that any settlement or initiative that goes beyond the Hashemite guardianship or attempts to impose new arrangements in Al-Aqsa Mosque is doomed to failure, given the connection of this file to religious, historical and legal considerations, as well as its great sensitivity at the Jordanian and Palestinian levels.
