The makers of the series “Between Doubt and Certainty” decided on choosing the Egyptian artist Hamza Al-Aili to embody the character of the late thinker and doctor Mustafa Mahmoud, in an anticipated work that will be shown during the Ramadan 2027 season, and deals with prominent stations from his life and his intellectual and humanitarian career.

The series brings back to the forefront an old dramatic project that the artist Khaled El Nabawy had announced years ago to embody the character of Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud, but the work was stopped for production reasons and did not see the light of day, despite reaching advanced stages of preparation.

The series is scheduled to monitor Mustafa Mahmoud’s journey from his early years, through his intellectual and scientific transformations, to his position as one of the most prominent Arab thinkers who left a wide impact in the fields of thought, science and culture.

Local reports indicated that the selection of Hamza Al-Aili came based on his ability to present complex characters with intellectual and human dimensions, which is commensurate with the nature of Mustafa Mahmoud’s personality and the specificity and diversity it carries.

Al-Aili continues to prepare for the role by reading Dr. Mustafa Mahmoud’s books and following his television programs, seeking to understand his thoughts and career before filming begins, while the work team continues to collect documentary and archival materials related to his life to ensure the greatest accuracy in presenting his biography on screen.

“A huge responsibility” and one of his most difficult roles

Artist Hamza Al-Aili spoke about his nomination to embody the character of Mustafa Mahmoud, expressing his happiness to participate in the project, stressing that presenting a character of this intellectual and human value represents a great responsibility and an important artistic challenge in his career.

Al-Aili said, during a television interview, that he is always keen to participate in works that provide inspiring models and carry influential humanitarian and intellectual messages, indicating that art has a real ability to positively influence the public.

He added that he has been following Mustafa Mahmoud’s intellectual experience for years, and appreciates the wide impact he left on readers and viewers, stressing that the deceased represents one of the exceptional figures who influenced successive generations through his diverse ideas and contributions.

Teaser and the beginning of the promotion

Last March, the producing company released the first teaser for the series, marking the start of promotion for the work that deals with the biography of Mustafa Mahmoud.

Executive producer Maha Selim said, in a post on her Facebook account, that the project has been a goal that the work team seeks to achieve for years, noting that the preparation stages took a long time of research and development before reaching the implementation stage.

She added that the series deals with aspects of the intellectual and humanitarian journey of the late thinker, while director Kamla Abu Zekry is directing the work, benefiting from her experience in presenting works of a humanitarian nature.
The teaser aroused widespread interest on social media platforms, amid a state of anticipation for the upcoming work.

Khaled Al-Nabawi’s unfinished project

Attempts to dramatize Mustafa Mahmoud’s biography go back to previous years, when the artist Khaled Al-Nabawi announced his willingness to embody the character of the late thinker in a project that was expected to see the light after obtaining the rights to present the biography.

Al-Nabawi explained in previous television statements that producer Ahmed Abdel Ati obtained the rights to work based on his conviction of the importance of Mustafa Mahmoud and his intellectual influence, noting that he spent many months researching and reviewing the details of his life in preparation for the role.

He revealed that the work team completed a pilot episode based on a number of Mustafa Mahmoud’s sayings and ideas, but the project faltered due to production obstacles that prevented it from being completed, so it remained locked in drawers despite the efforts made to complete it.

An exceptional trip

Mustafa Mahmoud left a special mark on Arab intellectual life, after he succeeded in combining his scientific training with his philosophical and intellectual interests, presenting an exceptional experience that was preoccupied with questions of existence, knowledge, and faith.

The deceased began his career by studying medicine, before gradually devoting himself to writing and writing, becoming one of the most influential and widespread thinkers and writers in the Arab world.

Over the course of decades, he presented dozens of books that varied between thought, philosophy, religion, science, and literature. His name was also associated with the “Science and Faith” program, which achieved a wide public presence and contributed to simplifying science and bringing it closer to the public.

Mustafa Mahmoud passed away in Cairo on October 31, 2009 at the age of 88, leaving an intellectual legacy that is still present in Arab memory to this day.
