Everton ordered to pay nearly £40m to Burnley.
The fine is the highest ever handed out in the Premier League.
The decision could have major consequences for Manchester City.
In the 2021/2022 season, Burnley went out Premier League. The team finished in 18th place with 35 points – four behind sixteenth-placed Everton, who managed to remain in the English top flight.
But in retrospect it has emerged that in the same season Everton broke the Premier League’s financial regulations and the club was punished in November 2023 with a six-point deduction for the breach.
If the six points had already been deducted in the 21/22 season, Everton would then have gone out of the league instead of Burnley, reasons the latter club – which last year therefore demanded compensation from Everton.
Now a Premier League committee has decided that Everton must pay just over 37 million pounds, around 470 million kroner, in compensation to Burnley, reports The Guardian.
Can affect the entire league
And according to the newspaper, Wednesday’s verdict could have major consequences for the entire Premier League.
The multiple league champions Manchester City has been investigated for a long time for similar violations of the rules that Everton were found guilty of, and should City also be convicted, several clubs may take legal action. According to The Guardian, several clubs have prepared to demand compensation for titles and European places they missed out on.
In a statement on its website, Everton writes that the club is “surprised and outraged” and that it has appealed the Premier League’s decision.
