The murder of the 11-year-old French girl, Liana, was not just a criminal incident that shook French public opinion in late May and early June. Rather, within a few days, it turned into one of the most prominent cases that opened a broad national debate about the performance of the justice system and child protection in France.
Although the police and the gendarmerie were the ones who undertook the search and investigation operations that ended with the discovery of the girl’s body and the arrest of the main suspect, the most prominent role in turning the case into a political and judicial crisis belonged to the French and international media, which not only reported the facts, but rather began to dismantle the background of the file and reveal the failures that preceded the crime.

The real shift in the course of the case began when media coverage moved from following efforts to search for the child to examining the background of the main suspect, Jerome Barela, 41 years old.
While the criminal investigations were continuing, French and international media organizations such as The Guardian, Le Monde, Le Parisien, and others published reports revealing that the man had been known to the authorities for years, and that his name had been mentioned in previous complaints and reports related to sexual assaults on minors.
Press investigations showed that one of the most serious of these complaints dates back to August 2025, when the family of a ten-year-old girl filed a complaint accusing him of rape, but the file continued to move slowly within the corridors of the judiciary without decisive precautionary measures being taken against him.
This media revelation completely changed the nature of public debate. Instead of focusing on the question, “Who committed the crime?”, public opinion began to ask another, more urgent question: How did a person surrounded by such serious suspicions remain free?
