Tsunami warnings after earthquake off the Philippines

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 has occurred off the coast of the southern Philippines, according to the United States Geological Survey USGS.

At least one person has lost their life and four have been injured, the police say.

According to the police, several buildings have collapsed. Videos on social media also show houses being reduced to rubble, and there are reports of power outages. People are advised to get to higher ground.

Along some parts of the coast of the Philippines, there is a risk of tsunami waves of up to three meters, according to the US Tsunami Warning Center, PTWC.

There is a risk of one meter high waves in parts of Indonesia and Malaysia. Japan has also issued a tsunami warning along the Pacific coast after the quake.

There is a risk of smaller tsunami waves in Palau, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea, among others.

Residents of Indonesia could also feel the quake.

The Philippines lies along the so-called Ring of Fire, an area of ​​intense seismic and volcanic activity.
