21 Iraqis were killed and 19 people, including two Iranians, were injured today, Sunday, as a result of a bus transporting passengers colliding with a truck in Dhi Qar Governorate in southern Iraq, while Iraqi President Nizar Amidi called for an investigation into the causes of the accident, offering his condolences to the families of the victims, according to a statement carried by the Iraqi News Agency.
The Iraqi Prime Minister’s media office also stated that Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi is following “the repercussions of the horrific traffic accident that occurred in the Batha district of Dhi Qar Governorate, which resulted in dozens of victims and wounded among the people of Basra Governorate.”
Al-Zaidi directed the competent authorities to open a thorough investigation into the causes of the accident, and to provide the necessary medical care to the wounded, in addition to providing full support to the families of the victims, according to a statement from his office.
The Iraqi Ministry of Health stated in a statement that the injured were transferred to health institutions to receive the necessary treatment and medical care, while medical and health teams continue to follow up on the infected cases.
A security source told Agence France-Presse that the bus “was transporting passengers heading to Karbala,” noting that “the collision caused the passenger bus to catch fire and burn completely,” adding that “search and rescue operations are continuing.”
