POP In recent years, Death Cab For Cutie been busy with anniversary tours for the early 00’s celebrated album “Transatlanticism” and “Plan”. The singer Ben Gibbard also frequently performed with the project The Postal Service during the same evening.
Behind the scenes, the songwriter struggled with his second divorce. In an interview with the British site The Line Of Best Fitincidentally named after an obscure song with the band, he talks about the need to encapsulate loss and grief in order to move on with everyday life. Build an inner tower of the demons, as the title suggests.
Eleventh album draws musical power from the band’s creative peak on the aforementioned records. The quintet from Bellingham is also symbolically back on the indie label after 20 years on Atlantic.
The opening ballad “Full of stars” instantly transports us to couples therapy, where Gibbard is left alone after his ex-wife gets up and slams the door for the last time. He still talks to her, as if she were still there.
“All I need is for you to be kind”, he asks.
The band sort of sit in a ring around him and play, full of pity.
During the decade, Death Cab For Cutie took over sometimes in so off his toes in his mathematical pop that the result was one big overthink. This time, Ben Gibbard has written eleven passionate pop songs that capture the band in their essence: lyrics about death anxiety and melodies that sparkle like sunshine on salt water.
When Gibbard opens the door to the tower he has built deep inside himself to stand out, pop music arises that is as adult as it is wistfully beautiful. The 49-year-old is a warm and wise lyricist. Don’t make yourself a victim. Examining himself, thinking about what he could have done differently.
As a depiction of divorce, “I built you a tower” is really as brutal as Lily Allen’s “West end girl” – just less tabloid-friendly. Rather, the drama unfolds between the lines. Like an episode of “Married at First Sight” – but with all the romance, beauty and bittersweetness that is love and relationships turned into poetry rather than theory.
In “Envy the birds”, Gibbard longs to get away from the hurtful quarrels. He envies the birds outside the window.
“It’s safer where it’s quiet”.
In the album’s highlight, “Stone over water,” the singer tells friends he’s okay. Trying to be immune to the gray hairs in the mirror. It’s dazzling pop music about just holding the mask.
