The Peruvian presidential election is marred by new controversies ahead of Sunday’s decisive round. The left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez is accused of cheating with party contributions and risks being brought to justice.
On Friday, a judge decided to approve the indictment against Roberto Sánchez, where prosecutors have sought five years and four months in prison.
The left-wing candidate is accused, among other things, of having received over 57,000 dollars, equivalent to over half a million kroner, in unreported party contributions.
However, the case does not appear to affect Sunday’s second round of Peru’s presidential election, as Sánchez has a week to appeal. If he wins the election, he will be granted immunity under the Peruvian constitution.
On Sunday, Sánchez faces the right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori, daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori.
