The Lebanese judiciary issued a ruling in absentia to imprison two anti-Hezbollah activists for 15 years, after the military court convicted them of “dealing with Israel and urging it to complete its military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon,” according to Agence France-Presse.
The agency quoted a judicial official, who requested to remain anonymous, that the military court convicted Ahmed Yassin and Jumana Jbara, both of whom reside outside Lebanon, on charges of “dealing with Israel and urging it to complete its military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon,” in a trial that began in November 2024.
Yassin, a university professor residing in Paris, was accused of “inciting the Israeli army to bomb the historic Baalbek Citadel, by publishing information indicating that the citadel contains weapons stores belonging to Hezbollah.”
Yassin also has a YouTube channel through which he posts political comments and is followed by more than 140,000 subscribers.
As for Jabara, she was accused of “praising Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee and thanking him for the bombing operations that targeted Lebanon, in addition to calling for normalization with Israel” during the war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2024, according to the official.
Lebanon and Israel do not have official relations, and Lebanese law punishes any contact with Israel with imprisonment. Lebanon has previously arrested people accused of spying for Israel.
Since the start of the war on March 2, Israeli strikes have killed more than 3,500 people, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
