The Wall Street Journal published a report in which it said that Ukraine has begun using high-resolution commercial satellite images that are sent directly to the devices of soldiers in the field, in a move that speeds up the implementation of drone strikes and gives Ukrainian forces greater ability to target Russian sites.
According to the report prepared by journalist Heather Somerville, Ukrainian units near the battle lines in the southeast used this technique to locate a Russian military meeting despite the natural camouflage provided by the dense trees.

After monitoring the site via satellite for several days, the soldiers concluded that the place was being used to plan Russian military operations, before they targeted it with an attack drone.
Almost instant images
The newspaper explained that the technology relies on near-instantaneous images provided by the American company “Vantur”, which specializes in space photography, and arrives directly on soldiers’ phones, tablets, and laptop computers, without going through traditional central reviews.
According to companies and people who participated in the experiments, this method reduced the time for identifying a target and executing a strike by up to 90%.
The report indicated that this step comes as part of Ukraine’s ongoing attempts to employ technological innovation in a war that has entered its fifth year, in the hope of maintaining tactical superiority over Russia, especially after a winter that was described as harsh.
The report believes that part of this superiority is related to improving the ability to strike Russian supply centers, warehouses, and defense systems from medium distances.

The newspaper added that the project represents cooperation between companies from the United States, the Netherlands, and Ukraine, and is – according to the participating companies and military analysts – the first known case in which commercial, unclassified “secret” satellite images are used to make direct combat decisions at the level of soldiers.
The report gave an example of an operation that the Ukrainian forces called “Starfall 2,” which they said lasted for two and a half weeks, and resulted in the destruction of Russian assets worth billions of dollars, including an ammunition depot that was identified by comparing recent and historical satellite images of the site.
Warnings
Despite the advantages provided by technology, the newspaper quoted experts warning of the dangers of reducing intelligence information review cycles, as accelerating the arrival of data to the field may increase the possibility of making decisions based on inaccurate information.
Satellites also remain of limited effectiveness in conditions of dense clouds or when tracking constantly moving targets.
The report concluded that the war in Ukraine has become a practical laboratory for developing the concept of “compression of the sensor-to-execution cycle,” a trend that may reshape the nature of modern military operations in the future.
