The Mayor of New York City, Zahran Mamdani, signed a symbolic document granting the city’s children “special permission” to stay up late to watch the 2026 NBA Final, which brings together the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs, in a move that reflects the great state of enthusiasm that the city is experiencing as its team returns to the final scene of the competition.
The initiative had a celebratory and humorous nature, as the mayor called on the students to enjoy the upcoming sporting event despite the late match schedules, in light of the hopes pinned on the Knicks to end their decades-long absence from the podium.
The 2026 final…a repeat of a historic confrontation after 27 years
This year’s league final holds special importance, as it brings to mind the famous confrontation between the two teams in the 1999 final, when the San Antonio Spurs succeeded in winning the title at the expense of the New York Knicks.
After 27 years, the conflict between the two parties is renewed in a series during which the Knicks are looking to write a different chapter and restore glories that have been lost to their fans for decades, while Spurs seeks to strengthen its coffers with a new title led by its French star, Victor Wimpanyama.
The New York Knicks reached the final after a distinguished performance in the playoffs, as they defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers with a score of 4-0 in the Eastern Conference final, while the San Antonio Spurs made their way to the final after an exciting series that extended to seven games against the Oklahoma City Thunder, which they won with a score of 4-3 to secure a ticket to the Western Division.
The final series will be held in a system (2-2-1-1-1), with Spurs having home advantage thanks to its best results during the regular season. The first match will start on June 3 at San Antonio, followed by the second match on June 5 at the same stadium, before the competitions move to New York for the third and fourth matches on June 8 and 10.
If the tie continues or additional matches are needed to decide the title, the fifth match will be held on June 13 in San Antonio, and the sixth on June 16 in New York, with the decisive seventh match – if necessary – being played on June 19 in San Antonio. All matches kick off at 8:30 pm EST.
It is expected that the final will enjoy wide public follow-up inside and outside the United States, not only because of the historical value of the confrontation, but also because it represents a clash between an ancient team seeking to end the long years of waiting, and another that aspires to inaugurate a new era of success led by one of the most prominent stars of the current generation in the American NBA.
