The primary battle for this fall’s gubernatorial election in California is so close that no winner has been declared – three days after the election.

President Donald Trump nevertheless congratulates Republican Steve Hilton, who currently leads.

“Congratulations to Steve who came in first,” Trump wrote on social media, adding that Hilton is a “winner” who will “turn around” the state quickly.

By early Friday, 56 percent of the votes had been counted, according to NPR. At the time, Hilton, an immigrated Brit who was a host on Fox News, had 27.6 percent support. Democrat and former health secretary Xavier Becerra was second with 25.6 percent, followed by Democratic financier Tom Steyer and Republican Sheriff Chad Bianco.

In California, the world’s fourth largest economy, the primary’s first and second place finishers advance to the gubernatorial election – regardless of party.
