The EU has approved a new aid package of 100 million euros for Lebanon, with the aim of supporting the country’s military during the fragile ceasefire.
“The latest ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon means a chance to avoid a return to full-scale hostilities,” writes the EU’s foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas on X.
“The best way to reduce the threat posed by Hezbollah is to strengthen the Lebanese state and its institutions, as well as to re-establish its monopoly on violence,” adds Kallas.
The support is the fourth package of its kind from the EU in recent years.
Israel continued its attacks in Lebanon on Thursday, despite the agreement earlier this week on a ceasefire. Hezbollah, which was not part of the talks in Washington, has in turn demanded an end to the Israeli invasion if the group is to respect an agreement.
