Protests against the new electoral map in Montgomery, Alabama in May.

The US Supreme Court gives Alabama the green light to redraw the electoral map – despite a lower court finding that the change discriminates against black voters.

The decision is a victory for Donald Trump.

The new map erases one of Alabama’s two constituencies with a black majority population, US media write.

The decision is the latest step in President Trump’s fight to keep the Republicans’ narrow majority in the House of Representatives in the November elections, and is considered to give the party an important advantage in the quest to win seats from the Democrats.

Alabama’s Republican administration took the case to the Supreme Court last week, after federal judges ruled that the map intentionally and unconstitutionally discriminates based on ethnicity.

Several other states have previously voted to redraw their electoral districts, both in favor of Republicans and Democrats.
