Former Greek football player Marios Oikonomou died at the age of 33, as a result of severe injuries he suffered in a traffic accident that occurred at dawn on May 26.

Oikonomou, who was born in Ioannina, was transferred to the university hospital in his city after the accident, where he underwent treatment in the intensive care unit for several days, before he died from serious head injuries.

According to reports, the player was hit by a reversing car while riding a scooter, which resulted in injuries that were described as irreversible.

The Italian club Cagliari mourned its former player in a statement that said: “Cagliari bids farewell with great sadness to Marios Oikonomou, who arrived in Italy from Greece at the age of twenty-one, and played his first Italian experience with the team’s jersey during the 2013-2014 season. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”

The Bologna club also expressed its sadness at the departure of its former defender, and wrote: “Goodbye Marius, you left too soon, and you will always remain in our hearts.”

During his professional career, Oikonomou defended the colors of several clubs, most notably Cagliari, Bologna, and Sampdoria, in addition to Copenhagen, with whom he won the Danish league title in 2022, the only title in his career.

The Greek defender later returned to his country, where he played for AEK Athens and Panetolikos before he died in 2024.

Oikonomou began his professional career with Bas Yanina Club in 2012, after which he entered a professional career during which he wore the shirts of ten different clubs.
