The US Central Command (Centcom) announced that US forces intercepted two Iranian ballistic missiles targeting US forces stationed in Kuwait, in a field development that reflects the fragility of the truce between the United States and Iran.
The US Central Command said on Monday on the “X” platform that “the two missiles were shot down immediately and no member of the American forces was harmed.”
Earlier, the US Central Command announced that its fighters carried out a series of precise strikes targeting air defense systems and an Iranian ground control station, in addition to destroying two drones that it said posed a direct threat to international shipping traffic.
The US Central Command statement indicated that the strikes were carried out on Saturday and Sunday in response to what it described as “Iranian aggression”, which included Tehran shooting down an American MQ-1 drone that was flying over international waters.
Today, Monday, the Iranian “Tasnim” agency published what was said to be a video proving the moment of the destruction of an MQ-1 drone by the new defense system of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Air Force.
This field escalation between the two sides comes at a time when the United States and Iran, through Pakistan, exchanged messages that included proposals with the aim of reaching a memorandum of understanding on the main issues in dispute, paving the way for negotiations leading to a final cessation of the war.
US President Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken about an imminent agreement with Iran, but disagreement over items including the release of Iranian funds and the fate of the Iranian nuclear program still prevents reaching a preliminary agreement.
Iranian threat
On the other hand, the Commander of the Iranian Army’s Ground Forces said in statements reported by Iranian media that Tehran is fully prepared to confront any threats and ground battles.
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi warned the United States and Israel of the consequences of violating the ceasefire.
This came in a blog post on the “X” platform, today, Monday, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued instructions to launch air strikes on the southern suburb of the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
Araqchi said that the United States and Israel bear responsibility for the consequences of any violation of the ceasefire, noting that violating the ceasefire on any front is a violation of the ceasefire on all fronts.
The Iranian armed forces warned Israel against continuing attacks on Lebanon, indicating that the continuation of military operations would not be something it could tolerate, as it put it.
Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz announced, in a joint statement, that they had ordered the army to attack the southern suburbs of Beirut despite the extension of the truce in effect from April 17 until the beginning of next July, and on the eve of a new round of negotiations between Beirut and Tel Aviv in Washington under American sponsorship.
Last week, US President Donald Trump announced the completion of negotiations on most of the terms of the agreement with Tehran, with the final arrangements remaining to be finalized with Iran and countries in the Middle East, provided that the agreement includes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, among other provisions.
Since last April 13, the United States has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports, including those in the Strait of Hormuz. Last March, Iran announced the closure of the strait and prohibited the passage of ships unless coordinated with it, in response to the American-Israeli aggression.
On February 28, the United States and Israel began a war against Iran, which responded with attacks on Israel and what it said were American interests in Arab countries, before reaching, with Pakistani mediation, a temporary ceasefire on April 8.
