The Financial Times reported on Tuesday that the United States is conducting consultations on the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons in other European countries that are members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The newspaper indicated that American officials expressed their openness to the idea of additional deployment outside the scope of the six current countries that host nuclear-capable bombers, namely Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey and the United Kingdom.
The newspaper explained that this step will include hosting more countries for so-called dual-capable American aircraft capable of launching nuclear strikes, and at the same time stressed that reaching an agreement to expand the scope of hosting American nuclear weapons is not imminent.
The report stated that countries in NATO’s eastern wing, including Poland and some Baltic countries, have expressed interest in hosting potential bases for these aircraft, and explained that discussions are taking place through NATO channels.
US President Donald Trump and many of his aides criticize European allies for not spending enough on their armies and relying on the United States for conventional defense.
Since the 1950s, the United States has maintained tactical nuclear weapons within a number of allied European countries. These weapons remain under American control, but if war breaks out, they can be used by aircraft of the host countries after American approval.
