With more than 1,000 suspected cases and the rapid spread of Ebola in Congo-Kinhasa, the situation is “deeply worrying”, warns Doctors Without Borders (MSF).
“Never before have so many cases been reported so soon after an Ebola outbreak was confirmed,” Deputy Director Alan Gonzalez said in a statement on Saturday.
Since the outbreak in mid-May, at least 246 deaths have been confirmed, according to the African Union’s disease control agency, the Africa CDC.
“The reality is that no one knows the true extent and severity of this outbreak. New suspected cases are being reported daily, while hundreds of samples have yet to be tested,” Gonzalez continues.
The organization warns that obstacles such as closed borders and airports lead to continued delays in medical equipment, humanitarian aid and personnel with cutting-edge skills.
