An experienced drag racing driver lost control and died during an event in Falkenberg.
– He was an icon in the sport, says Fredrik Hansson of the Swedish Motorsport Association.
The accident occurred during a company event in Falkenberg on Friday evening.
The driver lost control and flew off his motorcyclewho continued into the audience and hit a woman, who was seriously injured.
The driver, a man in his 60s, died in the accident. His next of kin have been notified.
The man is a profiled driver in drag racing circles in Sweden. He has competed and won several international and national competitions over several decades.
– The drag racing community is not that big, so everyone knew him in one way or another. He is truly an icon in the sport. A legendary driver, says Fredrik Hansson, responsible for drag racing for the Swedish Motorsport Association.
– It is a sad day in drag racing Sweden today, he adds.
Falkenberg motor club, where the man was a member, also mourns the driver after the news.
– He was a very great sportsman. Truly one of the best. He was very popular with us and will be missed, says chairman Ronny Andersson to Aftonbladet.
“Fixed and smooth”
The Swedish Motorsport Association states that there are around fifty active drag racing drivers in Sweden. The man in his 60s was often seen at various competitions and events.
– He has always been very helpful and fixed and tinkered with other people’s motorcycles at events. He was a very fine sportsman who many are mourning now, says Fredrik Hansson.
Woman life-threateningly injured
About 150 people were on the scene when the accident occurred. The police have given a picture of how it happened.
– During a show or similar, the driver loses control, goes off the motorcycle and is seriously injured. Then, as I understand it, the motorcycle continues into the audience and hits a person who is also injured, Jens Andersson told Aftonbladet at the police station on Friday evening.
The motorcycle then reportedly continued into a nearby building, which caught fire.
During Saturday morning, the region announces that the woman who was hit by the motorcycle is in her 30s and is being treated with life-threatening injuries in hospital.
The incident during Friday evening is the second noticed motorcycle accident in Falkenberg in a short time.
A few weeks ago a man in his 30s died after an accident during the SM in road racing.
