Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam described the recent Israeli military operations in the south of his country as a “dangerous and unprecedented escalation,” stressing that Tel Aviv is pursuing a policy of “comprehensive destruction and carrying out mass displacement” that goes beyond targeting specific areas to trying to impose a new field reality by force.
In statements that come amid escalating field tension, Salam stressed that the Lebanese state will spare no effort in achieving a ceasefire and ensuring complete Israeli withdrawal and reconstruction, noting that this war “was imposed on Lebanon and its cost today is great.”
He added that the government is determined to protect the country in a way that prevents Lebanon from being turned into a “mailbox for regional messages,” declaring that the decision to go to negotiations represents “the most appropriate option because it is the least expensive path,” while stressing that there will be no compromise on the national constants of complete withdrawal, the return of prisoners, and the return of the displaced to their land.
The Lebanese Prime Minister considered that Israel “will not gain security through destruction” and “the policy of scorched earth and collective punishment,” calling for the unification of internal efforts. He said, “When all efforts are united under the roof of the state and without exclusivity, we become stronger,” reiterating that “the decision on war and peace must be in the hands of the state.”
Since last March 2, Israel has launched an expanded aggression against Lebanon, leaving 3,355 dead and 10,095 injured, in addition to more than a million displaced, according to the latest official data.
