After 30 kilometers he delivered the death blow.
Edwin Kiptoo, 32, pulled away from the competition and took home the victory in the Stockholm Marathon.
It became doubly Kenyan when Rebeca Chesir, 33, took home the victory on the women’s side.
The Kenyan Edwin Kiptoo and the Ethiopian Gezu Anbese Desu pulled in from the others in the lead.
But Anbese Desu couldn’t keep up with the Kenyan’s pace.
Kiptoo, who had only been keeping up with the lead’s pace, dealt the death blow to St. Eriksgatan
After that, no one managed to catch up to his lead.
The Kenyan took home the Stockholm Marathon with a margin of over a minute and also takes home the prize money of SEK 92,000.
Went for the track record
The victory is the third year in a row that a Kenyan has won the Stockholm Marathon, but for Kiptoo it was the first time on the streets of Stockholm.
When Kiptoo pulled away from the lead he surely had the course record in his sights which stands at 2.10.10.
Unfortunately, he missed it by just 36 seconds as he clocked in at 2.10.46. Had he broken the record, he would have also taken home an extra prize sum of another 20,000 kroner.
The Swedes had no chance of victory. The best Swede was Ebba Tulu Chala in seventh on the men’s side and thus also took home the SM gold in the distance.
Double Kenyan
On the women’s side, there was a tight cluster of five women who stuck together. But with only a few kilometers to go, one by one disappeared.
In the end it was just Rebeca Chesir and Sintayehu Lewetegn with the first pulling away by a few meters with only a kilometer to go.
This made it double Kenyan and also a prize of 92,000 kroner for Chesir.
– The race was tough, we were all together so I thought I couldn’t win. I am very happy about the victory. It’s been a long time since I won. I have been second many times, says the winner to TV4.
The best Swede was Carolina Wikström, who came in eighth and won SM gold.
