China announced, on Monday, its strong opposition to the US sanctions imposed on 3 Chinese companies, which Washington accuses of helping Iran in its military operations, and described these measures as “illegal and unilateral.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiaqun said during a press conference that Beijing “has always asked its companies to abide by laws and regulations,” stressing that China “will firmly protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies.”
The Chinese official added that “the urgent priority is to prevent a return to fighting by all means,” criticizing what he considered to be the use of war to “maliciously link other countries to the crisis and distort their reputation.”
Trump’s visit
These statements come in conjunction with China’s official announcement of the visit of US President Donald Trump to China, which will begin the day after tomorrow, Wednesday, and continue until Friday, during which a summit will be held between President Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, amid escalating trade and geopolitical tensions between the two countries.
Guo Jiaqun said that China will work with the United States “on an equal footing, within a spirit of respect and concern for common interests,” with the aim of developing cooperation, managing differences and enhancing international stability.
It is expected that trade issues and customs duties will dominate the summit talks, in addition to the repercussions of the US-Israeli war on Iran and the global energy crisis resulting from navigation disturbances in the Strait of Hormuz.
This is the first visit by an American president to China since 2017, at a time when relations between the two largest economic powers in the world are witnessing increasing tension due to trade, technology, and geopolitical issues.
