In a fiery interview he conducted with the French channel LCI, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of the Proud France party, described Israel as “the most dangerous country in the region currently,” considering that it is the party that takes the initiative to attack its neighbors and ignite fires in every direction.
Melenchon accused the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “committing genocide” in the Gaza Strip, describing it as a “gang of fascists and lunatics” who are not content with destroying Gaza, but rather continue to annex lands in the West Bank and occupy the Golan, which represents an insult to international values and the image of Israel itself.
He said that these people “desecrate” the image of Israel, considering that their policies are what incite hatred and destabilize the world.
He pointed out that Israel is not content with the war in Gaza, but rather organizes the “confiscation of lands” in the West Bank and perpetuates the occupation in the Golan, which he sees as a blatant violation of international law, which should be France’s sole reference.
Mélenchon clearly called for the suspension of the trade agreement between the European Union and Israel, stressing that France, under his leadership, would lead a European front that includes Spain and other countries to exert economic pressure to stop the war.
A call to respect international law
In the context of the regional escalation, Mélenchon strongly criticized the French and American involvement in the conflict with Tehran, stressing that Israel and the United States attacked Iran without any international authorization. He explained, saying: “Whatever our opinion of the Iranian regime, France’s interest lies in respecting international law, and not in enshrining the law of the strongest, because we are simply not the strongest militarily.”
Mélenchon also opposed sending the aircraft carrier “Charles de Gaulle” to the region, describing the move as “merely a political show” by President Emmanuel Macron, warning against throwing French soldiers into a “combat zone” that does not serve the country’s sovereign interests.
Regarding the situation in Lebanon, Mélenchon stressed that Lebanese sovereignty must be respected, calling for arming the Lebanese army to enable it to control its borders.
In a firm message, Mélenchon said: “I am responsible for an immediate response. Whoever touches a French soldier under the UNIFIL banner will be hit hard,” stressing the necessity of transforming international forces into a real force of separation instead of withdrawing when confrontations occur.
Divorce with NATO and dependence on Washington
On the overall foreign policy front, Mélenchon pledged that if he arrived at the Elysee Palace in 2027, he would work to:
- Withdrawal from NATO Unified Command: To end military and technical dependency on the United States.
- Building an international “rejection front.”: It includes countries from the Global South, such as Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico, to confront what he described as “Western diplomatic blindness” towards the Palestinian issue.
- Recognizing “one China”Stressing that Taiwan is part of China, and refusing to enter into any military conflict with Beijing to please Washington.
Mélenchon concluded his interview by emphasizing that “France must return to being an independent mediating force,” away from the “at the same time” policy pursued by Macron, which Mélenchon believes has made France lose its prestige and influence in Africa and the Middle East.
It is noteworthy that Mélenchon (74 years old) announced last week his candidacy for the 2027 French presidential elections, expressing his confidence in inflicting a crushing defeat on the far right, which he considered his main opponent. Mélenchon also previously ran on behalf of the “France Proud” party in the presidential elections in France in 2012 and 2017, but he lost.
