Manchester City said in a statement that its player Antoine Semenyu was subjected to racist insults yesterday, Monday, during a match that ended in a 3-3 draw with host Everton, and his teammate Mark Guy was also subjected to abuse on social media following the match.
In a separate statement, Everton FC announced that Merseyside police arrested a 71-year-old man “on suspicion of committing a crime of disturbing public order of a racist nature” after reports from fans and supervisors regarding racist abuse directed at a player from the opposing team.

Everton said, “The man was released on conditional bail, which included prohibiting him from approaching within one mile of any specific sports stadium, for up to four hours before the start of the matches, during them, and up to four hours after the final whistle.”
Manchester City welcomed the quick response by Everton and the police in identifying the suspect, and also condemned the separate abuse targeting Guy on social media.
Gay had a difficult moment during the match, after his incorrect pass to goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma led to Everton player Tierno Barry taking advantage of the ball and scoring the equalizer in the second half.
Manchester City said in its statement: “We are extremely disappointed to learn that Mark Guy was subjected to a series of hateful racist posts on social media last night.”
He added, “We will continue to provide our full support to both Antoine and Marc, and we will never accept any form of discrimination in our game.”
With this draw, Manchester City is five points behind leaders Arsenal, although Pep Guardiola’s team still has a game in hand.
