German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Monday that the United States appears to lack a clear strategy to exit the Iran war.
He warned that “an entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by the so-called Revolutionary Guards.”
Mertz added that the Iranians “are negotiating very skillfully, as is clear,” explaining during a discussion with students in the German city of Marsberg that “the Iranians seem to be stronger than he thought, and because the Americans do not seem to have a truly convincing strategy in the negotiations.”
Mertz explained, “The problem with such conflicts is that it is not enough to just enter into them, but one must also exit them,” adding, “We saw this very painfully in Afghanistan over the course of 20 years, and we also saw it in Iraq.”
“Iranian skill”
Meretz criticized the United States, saying that it entered the war in Iran “without any strategy at all,” adding that this makes ending the conflict more difficult, “especially since the Iranians negotiate with great skill, or refrain from negotiating skillfully,” and said, “An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership.”
The advisor added, “The situation at the present time is very complicated,” explaining that this is costing them a lot of money, as this conflict and the war against Iran have direct effects on Germany’s economic performance.
Mertz stressed that Germany is still adhering to its offer of using minesweepers to ensure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which is central to global oil supplies, noting that this is conditional on stopping the fighting in advance.
