On Sunday, the security services in the city of Taiz in southwestern Yemen announced the arrest of the two main accused in the case of the assassination of an officer in the Drug Control Administration, after a tracking operation that lasted about a week.
The media advisor to the Taiz Police, Major Yahya Al-Atwani, said in a special statement to Al-Jazeera Net that the operation to arrest the accused was carried out late on Saturday night, following diligent monitoring and careful investigation efforts that continued for several days.
Al-Atwani added, “This achievement comes as a continuation of previous procedures that resulted in the arrest of a number of suspects in connection with the case,” noting that the total of those arrested so far has reached 8 people.
Al-Atwani explained to Al-Jazeera Net that the accused were placed in custody in preparation for completing the necessary legal procedures and referring them to the competent authorities.
Lieutenant Amr Al-Shamiri was killed on April 19, by gunfire from gunmen riding a motorcycle in the Al-Jumhuri neighborhood, east of the city of Taiz.
The authorities have not yet revealed the motives for the crime, while investigations are continuing to complete the case file.
On Sunday, the Yemeni authorities announced the arrest of a cell that they said was planning to carry out a series of assassinations in the temporary capital, Aden, in the south of the country, following the assassination of the leader of the Yemeni Islah Party, Abdul Rahman Al-Shaer, in the Mansoura District, north of Aden.
The official news agency “Saba” quoted a security source – which it did not name – that the security services were able to seize a cell, which it described as a “terrorist” cell that was planning to carry out assassination operations in Aden.
Yesterday, Saturday, the Yemeni Islah Party, the largest Islamic party in Yemen, announced the assassination of businessman Abdul Rahman Al-Shaer by gunfire from gunmen who fled, without any party claiming responsibility for the operation.
Al-Shaer held a leadership position in the party before his assassination, and chaired the board of directors of the “Nawras” private schools. Leaders in the Islah Party have previously been subjected to operations and assassination attempts in more than one governorate, since the start of the war between government forces and the Houthis about 12 years ago.
