The Asian Games will likely be moved to odd-numbered years starting in 2031, so that they will be held during the 12 months preceding the Olympic Games, in a move that would reshape the sports calendar, according to reports.

According to the proposal, the largest sporting event in Asia will become an event of dual importance, combining qualification and preparation for the Olympic Games, giving it additional weight.

The Asiatics scheduled to be held in Japan during next September and October will remain unchanged, but the 2030 edition in Doha will be postponed by one year, and the games will be held after that every four years as usual, but in odd years instead of even.

China’s official news agency (Xinhua) said that the Executive Office of the Olympic Council of Asia has approved the idea, and further consultations will now be held with international sports federations.

The specialized website “Inside the Games” reported that the proposal was discussed during a meeting of the Olympic Council of Asia in Sanya, the Chinese tourist city that is currently hosting the Asian Beach Games.

“This will allow the Asian Games to be a qualifying event for the Olympic Games, giving elite athletes more valuable competition opportunities and raising the overall level of the Games,” Xinhua quoted Song Luzheng, vice president of the Olympic Council of Asia, as saying.

The Asian Games are the largest sporting event on the continent, and more athletes often participate than in the Olympic Games.
