On Sunday, the Yemeni authorities seized a cell that they said was planning to carry out a series of assassinations in the interim capital, Aden, in the south of the country, following the assassination of a leader in the Yemeni Islah Party.

The official news agency “Saba” quoted a security source – which it did not name – that the security services were able to seize a cell, which it described as a “terrorist” cell that was planning to carry out assassination operations in Aden.

The source added that the operation resulted in the arrest of a number of members of the cell, and the seizure of materials and evidence related to its activities, noting that preliminary investigations revealed plans to target social and religious figures with the aim of causing chaos and destabilizing security and stability in the city of Aden.

He explained that the security services are continuing to complete investigations to uncover all the circumstances and track down the rest of those involved, in preparation for referring them to the competent authorities.

The source indicated that the cell may be linked to a number of recent “criminal” incidents, including the assassination of businessman Abdul Rahman Al-Shaer in the Mansoura District, north of Aden.

Yesterday, Saturday, the Yemeni Islah Party, the largest Islamic party in Yemen, announced the assassination of Al-Shaer by gunfire from gunmen who fled, without any party claiming responsibility for the operation.

Al-Shaer held a leadership position in the party before his assassination, and chaired the board of directors of the “Nawras” private schools. Leaders in the Islah Party have previously been subjected to operations and assassination attempts in more than one governorate, since the start of the war between government forces and the Houthis about 12 years ago.
