UFOs and the disappearance of scientists inflame conspiracy theories in the White House policy

The Guardian newspaper said that the file of the disappearance and death of a number of senior scientists and researchers in the United States has transformed from mere discussions in Internet forums into a national security issue whose repercussions have reached the halls of the White House and Congress.

The newspaper reviewed – in an article written by Edward Helmore – a mysterious phenomenon represented by the loss or death of at least 11 scientists associated with defense, space and nuclear technology research, which unleashed conspiracy theories ranging from assassinations run by foreign countries such as China, to more strange hypotheses linking these scientists to the “flying saucers” files.

This theory spread quickly from the Internet to right-wing media, then into public and political debate, until it reached Congress and the White House, and became the subject of attention and comments from prominent political figures, including President Donald Trump.

Hidden scheme

The story begins – according to the newspaper’s article – with the disappearance of retired Major General William McCasland, an expert in directed energy technology, who left his home carrying his gun, leaving behind his phone and glasses, without finding a trace of him after that, and then the snowball began to roll, including the names of researchers from NASA and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who died or disappeared under varying circumstances.

As these cases accumulated, social media sites and some right-wing media platforms began to link them, presenting them as part of a possible “hidden plan,” whether by foreign powers such as China or within secret projects related to space or extraterrestrials.

This perception has gained rapid popularity in a media environment saturated with conspiracy theories – as the author says – especially in the era of the spread of misinformation and artificial intelligence, despite the fact that the security authorities, and sometimes the families of missing persons, are trying to provide logical explanations related to mental health, accidents, or something similar.

Republican lawmakers have entered the crisis line, calling on the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Energy to open formal investigations to uncover what they described as a “potentially sinister connection,” and warning of the potential threat to national security if a connection between these incidents is proven.

Rich material to attract public opinion

The newspaper wondered: Could such a strange theory contain even a shred of truth? Or are lawmakers, the FBI and the White House, not to mention bloggers and the media, just going along with the latest clickbait conspiracy theories?

This issue reflects a state of division and anxiety in American society, and while experts see the matter as nothing more than “statistical coincidences” exaggerated by the age of digital misinformation, politicians, led by President Donald Trump, find in these narratives valuable material to attract public opinion and hold government institutions accountable.

The newspaper saw that the matter represents a confrontation between “dry facts” and “the desire to believe in the unknown,” where fear of external threats is intertwined with historical curiosity about aliens, making it difficult to separate criminal crime, voluntary disappearance, and international conspiracy.
