US President Donald Trump revealed the most important files that he will discuss with British King Charles III during his visit to the United States next Monday, which coincides with the worst tension in relations between the two allied countries.
Trump told Reuters that Iran, NATO, and the digital services tax in Britain are among the topics he intends to discuss with King Charles during his visit to Washington this week.
He explained that he would talk about everything, describing the king as a friend and a wonderful man. Trump’s statements come hours after talk that Charles’s visit would certainly contribute to restoring the tense relations between the two countries, which were pushed by the war with Iran to their lowest levels in 70 years.
The visit will last 4 days and coincides with the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States from Britain, where Charles will stop in Virginia, New York, and Washington, D.C., and will meet with Trump and deliver a speech before both houses of Congress, the first of its kind by a British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II’s speech in 1991.
Commemoration of September 11
The British King will also participate in a wreath-laying ceremony to commemorate the events of September 11, 2001, in front of the memorial at the site of the attacks that targeted the World Trade Center towers, according to the office of New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani.
These attacks resulted in the deaths of about 67 Britons, out of at least 2,606 people who died in them.
Tensions escalated between Washington and London following Trump’s repeated criticism of Prime Minister Keir Starmer for his refusal to join the war on Iran, and his downplaying of British military capabilities.
These criticisms prompted some members of Parliament – such as the leader of the Liberal Democrats (centrists) Ed Davey – to demand that the visit be postponed. This opinion was supported by 48% of Britons, according to a poll conducted by YouGov at the beginning of this April.
