UEFA is studying a new system
According to the British newspaper The Guardian, UEFA is considering reconsidering the qualifying system for the European Cup. Reports indicate that there is strong internal support for the idea of adopting a system inspired by the European Nations League, so that it is more dynamic and competitive instead of the traditional form of qualifiers.
The preliminary plans of the European Football Association (UEFA) were presented the day before yesterday, Tuesday, to the National Teams Competitions Committee. The federations will review and discuss the proposal in the coming days. A final decision may be made before the Europa League final in Istanbul next month.
For a period of time, the system of qualifying for the Euro Championship lost its appeal, as the major teams often qualified without any significant difficulty, especially after the increase in…
Number of teams qualified for the final rounds of the Euro and World Cup tournaments.
To revive interest in these qualifiers, UEFA could adopt a system similar to that used in the Nations League or Women’s World Cup qualifiers. According to this proposal, the teams will be divided into 3 grades (leagues), and then each grade will be divided into groups. Under this system, the major teams qualify directly for the final tournament, while the rest of the teams play playoff matches to qualify.
With this new system, 24 teams qualify for the Euro, which means the possibility of allocating additional seats, which allows matches to be held between the continent’s strongest teams. But on the other hand, smaller teams may feel more isolated.
Although maintaining the current system is still under study, UEFA has become more skeptical about this option. England, for example, is one of the countries that wants to change the qualifying system.
Finally, another idea emerged within this change, which is what is known as the “Swiss system” similar to what is used in the European Champions League, although broadcasters express great skepticism towards this proposal, because it may lead to major imbalances in the level of competition between the teams.
