The Director of the General Administration of Civil Protection in Cairo, Major General Mohamed El-Sherbiny, died while performing his work to extinguish the fire, after part of the property collapsed, due to a huge fire that broke out inside a furniture manufacturing workshop in the Manshiyet Nasser area in Cairo at dawn last Tuesday.
According to security sources, the fire that broke out in the area crowded with unlicensed workshops led to the collapse of part of the property as a result of an air compressor explosion, resulting in the death of an employee and two members of the Civil Defense on the spot, while Major General El-Sherbini was transferred to the hospital in critical condition before he died a day after the accident.
In addition to his field experience, the Major General was distinguished academically, as he obtained a doctorate in police sciences in November 2021, and he was also honored by being awarded the First Class Medal of Excellence on Police Day in 2026.
A hero who was not held back by his rank
The general appeared in a video clip that circulated on social media, participating in the process of putting out the fire, and talk about the fire and the deceased general dominated the discussions of Egyptians on the platforms, who praised the presence of the director of the administration in the first ranks of the confrontation.
Manal wrote, praising his courage:
The director of the administration could have remained in his office and received reports, but his rank or age did not prevent him from going to the heart of the event and insisting that he personally participate in the rescue operations.
Tariq agreed with her, saying:
The director of civil protection was standing on his feet to protect the people from danger. The fire would have killed many people had it not been for the civil protection men’s sacrifice of themselves.
On the other hand, tweeters focused on the human and professional value of firefighters, as Youssef commented:
For your information, the civil protection man costs the state large sums of money, courses, lectures, and missions. The bottom line is that they are a treasure for any state, and their lives must be preserved.
Urban challenges were not absent from the discussion, as Abbas referred to the nature of the region, saying:
The Manshiyet Nasser area is a random area, its buildings are without thoughtful engineering planning and are in danger of collapsing because they do not have reinforced concrete foundations. We hope to develop the area and build modern buildings.
Proactive steps
It is noteworthy that the Mansheyet Nasser area is currently witnessing a comprehensive urban plan, as the Egyptian government has begun moving the workshops to a private complex to secure them.
In a related context, the Ministry of Interior is working to modernize the firefighting system by importing suits equipped with self-breathing devices and increasing reliance on “firefighting robots” to deal with fires in narrow and dangerous areas, as well as tightening supervision to close unlicensed facilities that lack industrial safety means.
Major General El-Sherbiny is considered one of the most recognized competencies in the Egyptian police force. He dealt with dozens of major fires in the field throughout his career.
