11 people were killed on Sunday in a civil plane crash for skydiving training near the city of Nancy in northeastern France, local authorities announced.
The governor of the Mort-et-Moselle region, Yves Séguy, said that the victims were 5 instructors, 5 trainees, and the pilot, explaining that the trainees were a group of independent nurses.
The authorities reported that the plane was a Pilatus and had taken off from Nancy-Issy Airport before it crashed near the runway in a residential area and near two main roads.
In the neighboring town of Tomblin, local officials explained that the plane crashed in a residential area close to a shopping center, noting that emergency teams intervened immediately, and a medical and psychological support cell was activated for the families of the victims and witnesses.
For his part, a representative of the regional authorities said that the plane appeared to have suffered a malfunction before it crashed, adding that “the crash was very close to populated areas, and if it had occurred a few meters away, it could have caused other victims.”
