Switzerland defeated Algeria 2-0 in the round of 32 on Thursday evening in Vancouver, ending one of world football’s longest curses as the Nati claimed their first knockout victory in decades.

Breel Embolo opened the scoring in the 10th minute after a brilliant solo run from Johan Manzambi down the left flank, with the Stade Rennais striker finishing clinically at the near post. Dan Ndoye doubled the advantage immediately after half-time following a poor clearance from Algeria’s Rafik Belghali, as the Swiss winger cut inside and found the far corner with a precisely placed finish.

Switzerland’s clinical efficiency contrasted sharply with Algeria’s recklessness. Fennecs began brightly and showed early attacking intent, putting the Swiss defence under pressure with aggressive pressing and purposeful play. Les Verts had chances to surprise the Nati, with Aouar and Mahrez both coming close to opening the scoring in the opening exchanges.

However, Switzerland’s youthful star Manzambi proved decisive in the early moments, first with his solo run leading to Embolo’s opener, then with his defensive contributions that repeatedly shut down Algeria’s attacking momentum. The Algerian side’s lack of cutting edge in the final third, combined with defensive fragility, proved catastrophic, as their bright start unravelled into mounting frustration.

Historic win

The second half saw Algeria attempt to mount a comeback, but Switzerland’s organisation and control proved impenetrable. Ndoye’s early second-half goal (46th minute) effectively ended the contest, with Fennecs unable to respond despite introducing fresh attacking options.

The Swiss midfield of Granit Xhaka and Denis Zakaria controlled proceedings with minimal fuss, allowing their attacking players the freedom to exploit Algeria’s vulnerabilities down the flanks.

The victory represents a historic moment for Switzerland, finally shedding their knockout curse that had haunted them for decades. In the meantime, the Fennecs’ tournament campaign ends after a campaign that showed flashes of quality but ultimately lacked the consistency required at this stage.

Switzerland will discover their round of 16 opponent on Friday when Ghana and Colombia clash, with the Nati set to face the winner next Tuesday.
