Here are some headlines from tonight’s World Cup drama.
Portugal–Croatia 2–1
The second half made tonight’s round of 16 one of the World Cup’s most dramatic matches so far.
When Portugal scored their 2-1 goal in added time, the drama was not over. Croatia’s equalizer in the 13th minute of added time was disallowed three minutes later after a VAR review. The sensor inside the ball became one of Portugal’s great heroes.

Ronaldo denied his sister’s words
Cristiano Ronaldo’s outspoken older sister Kátia Aveiro talked about Ronaldo’s future in the national team ahead of the match against Croatia. According to Aveiro, “a reliable source” says that the 2026 World Cup is “Ronaldo’s last dance” with the national team.
Ronaldo himself was not as eager to confirm the same after the victory against Croatia.
– I no longer make decisions on impulse, he says.

Tears in the night – Arnautovic quits the national team
With his 49 national team goals, Marko Arnautovic is Austria’s all-time leading scorer. Now there will be no more national team goals.
When Austria lost their Round of 16 tie against Spain 0–3 on Friday night, Arnautovic made his final international appearance. Afterwards, tears rolled down the 37-year-old’s cheeks.
– It hurts that from now on I will no longer stand on the field together with my other family, says Arnautovic to the TV channel Service.
