Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that his country had reached a “historic achievement” after signing the framework agreement with Lebanon, and attributed this to the “painful strikes” directed at Hezbollah.
During a press conference in Jerusalem, on Saturday evening, Netanyahu explained that his country’s forces will begin withdrawing from the experimental areas in the villages of Zawtar al-Gharbiyya and Faron in southern Lebanon.
He confirmed that Israeli forces will remain in the so-called security buffer zone, which are villages occupied by Israel about 10 kilometers deep inside Lebanese territory. He said that this will be done with American and Lebanese approval, and he said, “We will remain in the region until Hezbollah and the rest of the terrorist groups are disarmed.”
He stressed Israel’s adherence to complete “freedom of military action” to respond to any threat, saying, “If it is necessary for us to enter Lebanon, we will do so, and if Hezbollah poses a threat, we will strike it forcefully.”
Netanyahu reviewed – in front of a display screen showing a map of Lebanon – what he said were the losses suffered by Hezbollah, and spoke of the destruction of about 90% of the party’s missile stock, and the killing of more than 9,000 of its members since the beginning of the confrontations.
Netanyahu considered that Hezbollah and Iran “are no longer what they were,” noting that the party did not receive the expected support from Tehran. He considered the Lebanese government’s announcement of its desire for peace with Israel “a fundamental change and the destruction of the Iranian axis politically and militarily.”
He also revealed that an Israeli delegation was heading to Washington to coordinate Israeli interests in the Iranian nuclear file.
On Saturday evening, the Lebanese Ministry of Health announced that one person had been killed and two wounded in an Israeli raid on the town of Nabatiyeh al-Fawqa in southern Lebanon.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army announced that it targeted suspected militants in an air strike on southern Lebanon, according to the army’s statement.
The Gaza front and the nuclear file
Regarding the Gaza Strip, Netanyahu announced that the Israeli forces are close to controlling 70% of the Strip’s area after dismantling most of the military capabilities of the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas, stressing that the current security situation is different from what it was before October 7.
Netanyahu also renewed his categorical rejection of the establishment of a Palestinian state, stressing that “there is no place for the two-state solution in any government that I seek to form later,” and affirming his rejection of any attempt to impose a withdrawal on Israel.
Regarding internal political matters, Netanyahu called for building an expanded government based on consensus to confront threats, warning against attempts to provoke a “civil war.”
