The mayor of Brockton has announced a curfew after Cape Verde’s round of 16 final.

Public safety must be protected.

On the night of Saturday, Swedish time, the undefeated World Cup debutant Cape Verde plays its round of 16 final against Argentina.

The World Cup success has sparked soccer fever on Cape Verde’s ten inhabited islands and in Brockton, Massachusetts. The American city, located just south of Boston, is often called “Cape Verde’s eleventh island” because almost every fifth resident has a Cape Verdean background.

There, people have gathered in the streets, waving flags and dancing late into the night after Cape Verde’s World Cup success.

Nine injured in shootings

The celebrations derailed at times during the WC’s group stage. Brockton police say at least nine people have been injured in shootings that occurred after World Cup matches. Other people have been injured by knife violence and other physical violence.

The curfew does not apply to people traveling to and from work or seeking care.
