Deschamps, who led France to win the World Cup in 2018 and reach the final in 2022, missed the 4-1 victory over Norway yesterday, Friday, a victory that secured France’s lead in Group Nine, which will give it a less stressful travel schedule in the coming period.
During Deschamps’ absence, his assistant Guy Stephane took over the leadership of the French team against Norway.
He said after the match, “I think a lot about Didier. We are very happy with his quick return. The players did what they had to do, and they were very emotional. They heard Didier talking to them and telling them that he was in mourning and had to leave. And of course, given the close relationship they had with him, they wanted to perform well for him.”
The French national team, which is based in Boston, is scheduled to play against Sweden in the round of 32 in New Jersey next Tuesday.
