The United States has carried out new targeted attacks against several parts of Iran, according to the US military command Centcom.
The attacks are said to be a response to “Iran’s continued aggression against merchant ships”, most recently a Panama-flagged ship in the Strait of Hormuz during last night.
“Iran was given an opportunity to respect the ceasefire, but chose not to,” writes Centcom on X.
The military is said to have targeted, among other things, Iranian military surveillance infrastructure, communication systems and air defense facilities.
Iran’s state broadcaster Irib reports explosions in Sirik and Qeshm.
The US strikes on Saturday are just the latest in an escalation between the countries. The situation intensified on Thursday, when a ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz was said to have been attacked by a drone that came from Iran.
The United States and Iran have entered into a memorandum of understanding that aims to eventually end the war between the countries permanently. A truce prevails while further negotiations take place.
